A paving machine comprises draft arms 50, 51 extending rearwardly from transverse pivot axes 52 and having mounted on their rear ends the end portions of an elongated torsionally flexible screed 44, means such as screws 25, for depositing paving material 35 adjacent the forward edge of the screed, tamping bars 42 to form a mat on which the screed rides and adjusting means 56, 57 operable to vary the angles of attack at which the respective screed end portions engage the material. The screed, tamping bars and a shaft 96 to be described below are in two parts to allow for forming a crown in the paving. Combined with the machine are first sensing means 70, such as a pendulum (not shown), freely swingable about an axis parallel to the direction of travel of the machine and connected to a potentiometer (not shown), responsive to the transverse inclination of the just laid mat surface and second sensing means acting independently of the first sensing means and responsive to the difference between the angles of attack for respective longitudinally spaced portions of the screed, preferably the end portions, the means comprising a torsionally rigid shaft 96 rigidly anchored at 98 to one end of the screed and via gearing 97 to a potentiometer 92, the winding 93 of which is anchored to the other end of the screed. Electrical means are also provided to combine the signals produced by the two sensing means into a control signal which may be shown on a dial 150 to facilitate manual adjustment of the means 56, 57 or which causes power means such as a motor 100 to drive one of the adjusting means to maintain the desired transverse slope of the inert surface.
