In a belt-fastening machine for the insertion of hooks 9, connected in a row by a wire 18 welded to them, into a belt 8, stepped jaw cheeks 5, 6 form pressing lands 20, 21, 22 which progressively close the hooks 9 as the jaw unit is traversed with respect to the assembly of hooks 9. The jaw cheek 5 is fixed on a lever 1 and jaw cheek 6 is adjustably mounted on a lever 2, the levers 2, 3 being pivotally connected at 3 and operated by toggle mechanism at 4. The lands 20, 21, 22 have serrated surfaces 23.
