A water-cooled furnace skid rail of tubular form has a transverse cross-sectional shape in which the vertical axial length is greater than the horizontal axial length when measured at the mid-point of the height of the section. The rail may be of oval, triangular or pear-shaped cross-section. As shown, each skid rail 1 is supported in a slot formed in saddles 3 which are welded to transverse supporting rails 5, the saddles serving to resist turning movement of the skid rail about its longitudinal axis.
