In steaming paper during manufacture, e.g. on a Fourdrinier paper-making machine wire, or at the calender rolls 12, 14, the steam is supplied through a pipe 26 to a pipe extending across the machine and provided with openings spaced along it, and surrounded by a casing 38 which converges towards an outlet slot 44, 46 directed upwardly against the paper web 10, the slot having re-entrant walls 48, 50 which diverge inwardly, the lower wall 50 being the shorter. Pins 52, 54 stiffen the casing and slot walls. The appliance is designed to prevent drops of water which condense from being blown against the paper. Condensed water is drained at 58. Steam may be supplied at each end of the appliance to supply half the web, the casing 38 &c. having a central partition &c.
