Beschreibung
Zusammenfassung:A carbon or graphite article is produced by shaping a mixture of carbon and/or graphite powder and a binder comprising unpolymerized or partially polymerized furfuryl alcohol, polymerizing the furfuryl alcohol and baking. The carbon may be in the form of pitch coke or carbon black. The mixture may contain up to 20% of binder. Polymerization may be effected by catalysis and/or by heat. Shaping is effected by casting, pressing, moulding, or extruding the mixture, with or without heat, while the binder is still liquid. Carbonization may be effected by heating to above 1000 DEG C. Further heating to 2000 to 3000 DEG C. may be effected. The apparent density of the baked article may be 1,7 gm/cc. and that of the graphitized article 1,8 gm/cc. The Darcy permeability of the baked and graphited article may be of the order of 10-13 sq. cm. Examples are given. Specification 901,847 is referred to.
