In a horizontal rotary drum type washing machine, a drive wheel 11 rotatable by a motor 10 can be clutched to one or other of a pair of driven wheels 1 and 4 for high or low speed rotation of a drum 9, and an automatic reversal switch (e.g. as in Specification 849,299) for periodically reversing the motor 10 during washing, is disconnected on operation of the clutch for high-speed rotation of the drum. During washing the drum may be periodically stopped, e.g. for 5 seconds, and then rotated in the opposite direction, e.g. for 10-20 seconds. The mounting of the drum is as described in Specification 881,271.
