In a belt fastening machine in which a jaw unit 12 carrying jaws 37, 43 manually operated by a lever 50 is adapted to be moved across the machine in steps after each closing operation by a pawl 53 engaging a rack 11, the pawl 53 is actuated by a member of the jaw unit on each opening movement of the jaws. As shown, a sliding member 52 which carries the pawl 53 is coupled to the pivot-pin 46 of a pair of togglelinks 45 actuating the jaw levers 38, 42. Specification 781,386 is referred to.
