Class 86 A pug mill for the homogenizing and extrusion of viscous polymeric thermoplastic materials, especially polymethyl methacrylate a n d polyvinyl chloride, has a rotatable feed screw 14 and a milling head 10 provided with circumferential rows of flat pyramids as at 12 and rotating within an outer case 16 having a liner 11 similarly provided with pyramids as at 13. The pyramids may be square and arranged in axial rows as shown, or square and rectangular, and may be axially staggered. Heating and/or cooling passages may be provided in the outer case 16.
