Zusammenfassung:836,691. Treatment of irradiated uranium. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 30, 1952 [Jan. 31, 1951], No. 2416/51. Class 39(4). An aqueous uranium nitrate solution derived from neutron-irradiated uranium is tested for suitability for organic solvent extraction by agitating a sample with the organic solvent in a vessel having a transparent wall, allowing to stand, and observing the conditions at the interface. Agitation is effected by slowly reversing and returning the vessel for half a minute. The mixing and standing are repeated until two consecutive tests give the same effect and this is taken as an indication of the behaviour in a countercurrent extraction column. The organic solvent may be the dibutyl ether of diethylene glycol which is used to extract plutonium and uranium, leaving fission products in the aqueous phase. Emulsification at the interface is caused by the presence of silica and may be avoided by boiling the aqueous solution for 12 hours or more.
