Class 34(2) Clothes drying apparatus suitable for incorporation in a washing machine of the kind described in Specification 810,115, comprises a snail-shaped housing 1, Figs. 1, 2, divided by a baffle 4 into a compartment 2 containing a frusto-conical centrifuge 7 having a heavy rim at its upper open end and another 3 for the reception of water extracted from the clothes and thrown through a gap A between the baffle and the housing. Collection of water in the space around the centrifuge and its braking action thereon are thus avoided. The compartment 3 has a false floor 39 having a slot 40 through which water passes and collects in a sump 35 from which it is withdrawn through a hose 33 by a rotary pump 19 of the sliding vane type and discharged through a hose 33. The pump casing 20 is attached to a rubber diaphragm 12 secured around its outer periphery to the housing 1, and the pump rotor 26 and the centrifuge are mounted on the driving shaft 27 of an electric motor 18 suspended from the pump casing. The pump is fitted with a sifting valve 47 to prevent the formation of an air lock in the pump when the sump 35 is completely emptied.
