Zusammenfassung: | A bonding composition comprises an unsaturated polyester resin, a monovinyl aromatic compound and a finely-divided vinyl chloride polymer containing a major proportion of vinyl chloride units, preferably the diameters of the major proportion of the particles being in the range 0.01 to 20 millimicrons. Unsaturated polyester resins specified are the allyl or substituted allyl alcohol esters of phthalic, adipic, succinic and sebacic acids, glycol esters of unsaturated acids, such as maleic, fumaric, itaconic and citraconic, with or without saturated dicarboxylic acids (including endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic and hexachloro-endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acids). The aromatic monomer may be styrene, vinyl toluene, a -methylstyrene or a mono- or dichloro-, or alkoxy- or hydroxy-styrene. In Example 4 di-allyl maleate is included in addition. The polymer is preferably stirred into the mixture by means of a mixer which does not stir in high proportions of air. Specified polymers are polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidine chloride, vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile, preferably produced by emulsion or dispersion processes. The bonding compositions may be cured by heat alone or by catalysts such as benzoyl, lauryl and methyl ethyl ketone peroxides and isopropylbenzene, t.-butyl benzene and 1-hydroxy cyclohexyl hydroperoxides. Promoters such as dimethyl, diethyl and di-n-propyl anilines, dimethyl-p-toluidine, diethyl-a -naphthylamine, p-dimethylamino azobenzene, dimethyl m-aminophenol, cobalt and manganese naphthenates may also be used and inhibitors such as hydroquinone, a -naphthol, t.-butyl catechol, benzaldehyde and tetrachloroquinone may also be included. Mixing of the composition may be improved by the use of dispersing agents such as soaps, sodium salts of sulphur containing organic compounds, longchain fatty alcohols and polyethylene oxide, and other optional additives are fillers, e.g. silica, clay and whiting, pigments, dyes and plasticisers. The compositions are inherently thixotropic and are useful for bonding (laminating) at temperatures below 80 DEG C., materials such as cotton, cellulose pulp, glass fibre cloth or mat, asbestos and slag-wool, to give products such as boats, tubes, ducts, car bodies and aeroplane parts. The bonding is preferably carried out so that the temperature at any point within the article does not rise above 100 DEG C. Examples describe the production of glass cloth laminates of improved physical pro |
