Class 110(3) An air intake of a jet propulsion engine in which the flow of gas or air is controlled by a sheet-like jet or jets projecting into the intake has the jet or jets formed by a nozzle or nozzles inclined in the direction opposite to the flow to be controlled with the wall or walls of the nozzle or nozzles downstream of the flow to be controlled forming a sharp edge or edges with the adjacent wall of the intake. In the case of a ram jet, the intake is controlled by nozzles inclined forwardly and in the case of a pulse jet the back flow of gas from the combustion chamber is controlled by nozzles inclined rearwardly. In the ram jet shown, Fig. 1, the fairing 1 encloses a faired body 2 to form a slightly convergent - divergent intake passage. Slots 4 and 5, arranged in the fairing 1 and body 2, are supplied with compressed air from a compressor 3a driven by a gas turbine 3b. The flow of compressed air is controlled by a valve 7. In a modification, the air supplied to the slots 4 is drawn from a forwardly facing duct formed on the axis of the body 2. In a further modification, slots are formed in the fairing 1 and when compressed air is supplied to the slots 4 some of the air entering the unit is forced through the slots in the fairing 1 to the exterior of the unit. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the air inlet 16 of a pulse jet unit comprises a faired body 18 having a slot 17 or a slot 20 or both to which gas under pressure is supplied by pipes 19 and 21. The pipes 19 and 21 may be connected to the combustion chamber 15, to a cylinder of compressed air or to a steam generator which may be a cooling jacket around the combustion chamber 15. The gas or steam enters the intake 16 at an angle of about 20 degrees to its axis and prevents the discharge of the gases from the combustion chamber 15 back through the intake.
