In order to avoid damage to a submarine cable where it enters a repeater housing 1, the flexibility of the cable is decreased towards the housing by providing concentric springs 21-23 which extend to different points along the cable. The armouring wires 7 are clamped in grooves 11, 16 in a plate 10 and sleeve 14 by means of clamping rings 8, 9, and are tied over the cable by lappings or wire 13, 19, 25. In another embodiment (Fig. 4) additional armouring wires 28 are passed through holes 27 in a ring 26 and are bent back and clamped along the cable for different distances to provide the varying flexibility, screws 91 securing the clamp ring 9 to the studs 17 while these are being fitted.
