Zusammenfassung:	An appliance, which can be a hair care device, vacuum cleaner or power tool, includes a main unit 12 to which one of a plurality of attachments (14, 16, fig.1) is attachable, an emitter 30, an optical sensor 32, and a control module 28. The emitter is configured to emit optical radiation toward a respective one of the plurality of attachments when attached to the main unit. The optical sensor is configured to receive reflected optical radiation from the respective one of the plurality of attachments when attached to the main unit. The control module is configured to determine which of the plurality of attachments is attached to the main unit based on data output by the optical sensor and control operation of the device e.g. fan speed and temperature in a hair dryer, based on the identified attachment.
