Inductive coil assemblies for electronic devices and accessories

An electronic device 102, such as a wearable smart watch, comprising a housing 104 having a wall 105 with a slot 114 for receiving an accessory 120, an inductive coil 130 positioned in a recess in a first sidewall of the slot, preferably with a cap (538, fig.5A). An accessory retention feature with a release button 116 may be disposed in a second sidewall of the slot. The accessory, preferably a band for securing the device to a wrist, comprises an attachment region insertable into the slot for power transfer to/from the device, with an inductive coil 134 oriented towards a first side surface and a retention feature 124 oriented towards a second side surface. A method of manufacturing the device includes forming a cavity (1002, fig.10A) extending from a rear surface (810, fig.8) of a housing blank (800, fig.8), forming a glue port (1004, fig.10A) extending from a front surface (812, fig.8) and connecting to the cavity, inserting an inductive coil with a cap blank (902, fig.9A) into the cavity, injecting adhesive through the glue port, and forming a slot in the housing blank through the cap blank.
