A compressor

A compressor for use in domestic appliances comprising an impeller 22 with an inlet 40, an outlet 42, a hub 26 defining a rotational axis 44, a plurality of impeller blades 28, and a shroud 30, a housing 24, a leakage flow path 50 defined between the shroud and the housing, a labyrinth seal arrangement 58 provided in the leakage flow path, and a flow straightening arrangement 78 having an inlet at an outlet of the labyrinth seal arrangement. The flow straightening arrangement may be spaced away from the outlet of the leakage flow path to provide a wake recovery chamber (fig.1, 90) and may comprise a mesh, foam body or straightening vanes that may be spaced about the axis of rotation and/or be greater in number than the number of blades. The labyrinth seal arrangement may comprise one or more shroud rings 60 interdigitated with one or more housing rings 62 so as to form a tortuous flow path for fluid flowing through the leakage flow path. The impeller may be a mixed flow impeller. A fan assembly comprising the compressor as disclosed.
