Hairstyling apparatus with reconfigurable current flows

A hairstyling apparatus 100 has heating elements 102, 104, 106, 108 and a sensor 112 for determining voltage and/or current output of an electrical energy source, and outputting a signal indicative of the determined voltage and or/current output. Switching components 126, 128, 130 are connected with the heating elements. The switching components are controlled to reconfigure current flows through the plurality of heating elements in reliance on the signal. The heating elements may be connected in series or in parallel depending on the configuration of the switching components. Alternatively, one or more heating elements may be selectively bypassed. Different configurations of the heating elements have different total circuit resistances through which current flows, enabling operation of the hairstyling apparatus with different mains voltage ranges.
