A steering column assembly for a vehicle

A steering column assembly 10 for a vehicle has an elongate steering column 14 rotatable about its longitudinal axis 16 to which a steering wheel (18, Figure 1) is attachable at one end. Steering column 14 has a first gear 24 connected to and rotatable with the steering column and spaced from the steering wheel attachment location, and first gear 24 is engaged with first and second worm screws 46, 48 driven by output shafts 32, 34 from first and second motors 28, 30, with a controller 66, 68 for driving each motor. Motor position sensor means are provided for sensing the rotational position of the motor output shafts, each sensor means having a target 50, 52 fixedly mounted to its respective motor output shaft on the opposite side of its worm screw from its motor and a sensor 58, 60 for detecting the target. A vehicle with such a steering column is also provided.
