A customer local area network (LAN) 300 includes customer premises equipment (CPE) 310, and a wireless LAN (WLAN) including wireless repeaters (WR) 330 and user devices (UD) 320 Devices communicate using media access control (MAC) addresses include an organisationally unique identifier (OUI), a network interface card identifier (NIC ID) and a global/local bit. The repeaters modify UD MAC addresses in messages forwarded to/from the CPE, typically by changing the OUI and setting the global/local bit to local. The invention collects records about UD including MAC addresses, preferably for CPE control by a network management server (NMS) 220, preferably using a TR-069 protocol. The invention takes records with local MAC addresses and identifies records with other MAC addresses related to the same UD, preferably by comparing NIC IDs. The related nature of the records is used when reconfiguring the customer network.
