Universal sensor performance and calibration target for multi-sensor imaging systems

Provided are systems and methods used for calibration of camera/sensor systems, such as visible light cameras and infrared cameras installed on vehicles. A calibration target system 500a includes at least one calibration target element and at least one black body source. The calibration target element comprises an outer perimeter 502, a modular transfer function (MTF) testing area, a through hole 504 extending through the at least one calibration target, and a plurality of slots 510, 512 extending through the at least one calibration target. The MTF testing area comprises a light-absorbing surface 507, 509 and at least one slant edge that is non-orthogonal with respect to any side of the outer perimeter. The black body source is positioned behind the at least one calibration target elements and configured to emit black body radiation such that the black body radiation passes through the through hole and the plurality of slots. Preferably the MFT testing area comprises a chequerboard pattern of alternating light and dark areas, with the slots extending through the light areas.
