Zusammenfassung:An input system 10, suitable for controlling a vehicle function, comprising a controller 12 coupled to a display 14 and an input device 18. The input device 18, which selects a control element 14-1,...,14-10 displayed on the display 14 by the controller 12, comprises a base portion 22; a selection portion 26; and a position sensor 30. The selection portion 26 has magnets (28, Fig. 3) that are movable relative to corresponding magnets 24 disposed in the base portion 22, and the position sensor 30 senses the position of the selection portion 26 relative to the base portion 22. The base-portion magnets 24 generate a magnetic field that provides an attractive force on the selection-portion magnets (28, Fig. 3), the attractive force having local maxima at positions uniquely assigned to the control elements 14-1,...,14-10 displayed on the display 14, and the controller 12 identifies the control element 14-1,...,14-10 selected when the selection portion 26 is positioned in one of these unique positions.
