Zusammenfassung:	A method is provided for monitoring optical cable for disturbance events such as intrusion at a fence or boundary. A dual monitoring systems where optical signals are received at a receiver 4 from at least one optical 1 fibre of the cable which are modified by disturbance events such as intrusion at a boundary or fence. A signal carrying data streams (S1 to Sn) which are associate with multiple different portions of the fibre along its length are received at a processor. This data carries information indicative of disturbances at respective portions of the fibre/boundary. An algorithm 10 takes into account whether conditions either derived from analysis of the data stream signals or from external data 16 from an anemometer 161, rain gauge 162 or a weather reporting service 163. The algorithm generated a first output indicative of a disturbance but also take weather conditions into account before issuing a full alarm
