Address setting of building management system devices

A method of automatically setting an address of a network device 4 of a building management system such as a fire alarm system 1 comprises: during installation of the device 4 on network wiring 2 of the system 1, a code scanner 12 of a portable installation tool 9 scans a code, such as a QR code, on the device 4, the code including a serial number of the device 4; location information is collected in the installation tool 9 at the point of installation; the installation tool 9 is connected to a network wiring controller 5 after the device 4 has been installed; the code information and location information is downloaded onto the network wiring controller 5; a network address is generated for the device 4; and the network address is set into the device 4 via the network wiring 2. The portable installation tool may be a smartphone 9, whilst the code scanner may be a camera 12 of the smartphone 9. The location information may be a geolocation of the smartphone 9. The network device 4 can be any fire alarm system device, including a smoke detector, heat detector, sounder, strobe, call point etc.
