Zusammenfassung:A hair styling appliance has electrodes 40, 41 and a drive unit 50. The drive unit is operable to determine the presence or absence of hair between the electrodes. In response to determining that hair is present, the drive unit applies an alternating voltage to the electrodes to heat the hair dielectrically. The presence of hair is preferably determined by sensing an electrical parameter indicative of the impedance of the electrodes. When the electrical parameter is above a set threshold and below an upper threshold heating may begin. A first alternative voltage may be applied to determine if hair is present, and if it is a second alternating voltage may be applied to heat the hair. A low-power mode may correspond to the first alternating voltage and a high-power mode may correspond to the second alternating voltage.
