A waste processing apparatus

A waste processing apparatus 100 for separating film-wrapped waste, e.g. waste collected from waterless toilets, comprises a shredder 400 for shredding film-wrapped waste into a mixture of film fragments and waste, and a separator 500 having a distal end (506, Fig. 5A) and a proximal end 502, Fig. 5A), the separator receiving the mixture at the proximal end. The separator comprises a conveyancing means (504, Fig. 5B), e.g. a rotatable centreless auger, to convey separated shredded film fragments to an outlet at the distal end. The separator comprises an enclosure with an adjustable trough (552, Fig. 5A) having a screen (503, Fig. 5A) at the proximal end allowing waste to flow to a waste outlet (509, Fig. 5A), and separating the shredded film fragments therefrom. The clearance between the screen and the conveyancing means is adjustable. In another aspect, an agitator (206, Fig. 2A) is operable to agitate material upstream of the shredder. In a further aspect, the apparatus comprises a hopper 200 for directing the waste to the shredder and a tipper 300 for emptying a barrel containing the waste into the hopper. A ventilation system 170 extracts gas from the hopper and/or a distal end of the separator.
