Zusammenfassung:	A drive unit 10A, for a wheeled article such as a wheelchair, comprises at least a first shaft 12a connectable with one or more wheels Ra, Rb of the wheeled article, at least a first electric motor 14a providing torque to the first shaft 12a, at least a first brake 18a and at least a first clutch 16a arranged in a torque transmission path between the first electric motor 14a and the shaft 12a. In another embodiment two motors 14a, 14b having shafts 12a, 12b which are connectable to the wheels Ra, Rb via clutches 16, 16b. The motors 14a, 14b are coaxially arranged and are simultaneously slidable, via actuator unit 32, along an axis so as to engage clutches 16a, 16b. Actuator unit 32 may comprises a crank mechanism which converts rotational movement of a servo motor into sliding movement of the motors 14a, 14b. A control unit (computer unit) 22 controls operation of the motors, brakes and clutches. The motors are independently controlled so that the clutches do not require switching for independent driving of the wheels.
