System and method for tracking personnel

A system for tracking the location of a person 10a, b, c or asset being assigned with a uniquely identifiable tracking device 12a, b, c, comprising means for assigning a virtual geographic perimeter which corresponds to a predetermined worksite location; and means for generating an alert or alarm condition if the tracked person or asset enters or departs from the predetermined worksite location. The virtual geographic perimeter preferably being set by a user or defined by worksite markerboards having location determining means affixed thereto, the worksite markerboards being positioned at each end of the predetermined worksite location. The virtual geographic perimeter preferably includes a set of coordinates presented as longitude and latitude or as Easting and Northing. The set of coordinates are preferably sent to the tracking device and based on the detected position of the device it is determined if the device is inside or outside of the perimeter.
