Zusammenfassung:A portion of a display which may be a backlight unit, comprising a screen 102 divided into an array of segments 110 and a transparent plate 102 which directs light rays through the screen. Each segment of the array is configured to switch between a pass and a block mode; in the pass mode, light rays are transmitted through the segment 112, and in the block mode, light is blocked from passing through the segment and the segment is opaque 112''. Ideally, the display unit is used in a stowable display in a vehicle (fig 4b). Ideally, the segments have independently controllable transparency. Ideally an electric field switches the segments between the pass mode and block mode. The screen may be an LCD or may be switchable glass. The transparent plate may guide light from a light at the edge of the plate.
