Zusammenfassung:A controller (104, Fig 2) and method 1300 for controlling operation of an internal combustion engine (ICE) (101, Fig 1). The controller receives a request signal to increase the speed of the ICE from zero; in dependence on receiving the request signal, provide an output signal to cause the ICE to be rotated; and maintain in a closed position an intake valve (301, Fig 3) of a cylinder(s) during at least a first intake stroke of the cylinder(s). Preferably combustion of fuel during each power stroke that immediately follows an intake stroke in which the intake valve is open. A second request signal may be received to cause opening of the intake valve of each cylinder of the ICE; cause injection of fuel into each cylinder; and cause combustion of fuel during each power stroke of each said cylinder that next follows each intake stroke of that cylinder in which the intake valve was open. A secondary torque source may rotate the ICE while the intake valve of the cylinder(s) is maintained in the closed position. A control system comprises valve actuation by means of a variable valve lift system, preferably with a hydraulic system.
