Zusammenfassung:	A beacon 1 comprises a base 2 and a telescopically extendable light emitter 3 mounted to a first end thereof, in which said light emitter 3 comprises a plurality of telescoping sections, at least one of which is transparent or translucent, in which said base 3 comprises a light source positioned to transmit light from said first end into said light emitter, and in which said beacon 1 comprises a mounting 9 for affixing said beacon 1 to an article to be detected with said base arranged with its first end uppermost. The beacon 1 may be connected to the mounting 9 by a hinge 27,30 allowing it to be stowed horizontally in a trough of the mounting 9 when not in use. In an embodiment the mounting 9 is adapted to attach to the saddle and seat post of a bicycle.
