An emissions abatement system, for an engine system having an engine (42, fig 2) and an aftertreatment system (46, fig 2) for use in an off-highway vehicle (10, fig 1), comprises a controller. The controller activates a heating component to raise an operating temperature of at least a portion of the aftertreatment system when it receives an input indicative of an intent to start the vehicle. The controller determines when the aftertreatment system has reached a first heated condition and directs the engine to be started. The vehicle is operated in a first mode until a second heated condition is reached; it is then operated in a second mode. The heating component comprises a combustor (54, fig 2) arranged such that exhaust gases from the combustor provide heat energy to raise the temperature of the aftertreatment system. The aftertreatment system may comprise a DOC (50, fig 2) and an SCR (48, fig 2).
