Movable steering wheel assemblies

A motor vehicle steering assembly is provided with a hub that rotates a steering column about a steering axis and a rim moveably coupled to the hub and pivotable about a second axis with a component perpendicular to the first axis. One arrangement has a sensor for detecting a pivot angle of the rim about the second axis; another arrangement has a controller which determines a pivot angle of the rim and activates or deactivates an ignition system and/or a driver restraint system based on the pivot angle. Typically the ignition or restraint will be deactivated in a reclined position, and a lock may be provided to prevent pivoting when the systems are activated. The coupling may comprise a series of pins in one of the hub or rim and slots in the other, and the pivot angle may be determined by an electrical connection between a pin and a slot.
