Zusammenfassung:A control system (200, fig 2A), for a host vehicle operable in an autonomous mode, comprises one or more controllers (202). The control system (200) is configured to determine that the host vehicle must stop 7004 at least partially within a lane, in response to an internal hazard 7002, such as a vehicle fault and/or an occupant is unconscious, associated with the host vehicle. In dependence on the determination that the vehicle must stop, the control system controls a direction of the host vehicle 7006 to cause the host vehicle to stop in a position laterally offset from a centre of the lane, e.g. a target stop location. If there is an obstruction to opening a door, the offset is adjusted to allow door to be opened. In some instances the vehicle may have to change lanes before coming to a halt.
