An antenna

An antenna 1 comprises a substantially elliptical element 10 arranged substantially perpendicular to, and spaced apart from, a substantially elliptical ground plane 20. The element has a major axis substantially perpendicular to the ground plane, and a minor axis substantially parallel to the ground plane. The minor axis of the element may be substantially aligned with a major axis of the ground plane. Preferably, the major axis and minor axis of the element are substantially the same length as those of the ground plane. The space between the element and the ground plane may be selected to achieve a good impedence match between the element and the ground plane. One or both of the element and the ground plane may be coated with a magneto-dielectric material. The antenna may be encapsulated, preferably in a foam material 30, such that the element and the ground plane are physically shielded.
