Shelf support system

A support system for supporting at least one shelf platform 530. The support system comprises a mounting bracket 502, 504 for attaching to a wall or other external surface. The mooting bracket includes first and second ends, and a channel disposed between each first and second end. Supporting elements or rods 524, 526 are configured to support at least one shelf platform, and each supporting element includes an engaging member 516, 518, 520, 522 configured to connect with the channel of the mounting bracket. The channel and engaging member are shaped such that, when the engaging member is engaged in the channel, the engaging member is positionally constrained to movement along the first channel and is free to rotate within the channel. In a preferred embodiment, the supporting member is extendable (132, figure 1). The shelf support system may be for use between opposing wall surfaces, including wall surfaces that are asymmetrical or uneven.
