Liquid crystal devices

Disclosed is a liquid device and an associated method of manufacturing said device. The liquid crystal device comprises a first assembly, D, which comprises a liquid crystal material, 24, contained directly between a polariser component, 14, 10, 8, 12, 16, and a first control component, A, wherein the first control component includes a stack of layers defining electrical control circuitry, 1,2,4,6. Further liquid crystal material, 26, is contained directly between the polariser component of the first assembly and another control component, C, which includes another stack of layers defining electrical control circuitry, 18,20,22. Each liquid crystal cell thus has its own control circuitry whilst sharing a polarizing component. Also disclosed is a polariser component comprising a polariser element and an alignment layer on at least one side of the alignment layer. The alignment layer is capable of controlling the director (i.e. the direction of preferred orientation of the liquid crystal molecules) of a LC material interfacing the alignment layer in the LC cell.
