Zusammenfassung:	A method of operating a motor vehicle 2 that comprises a stop-start system 100 configured to shut down an engine 4 of the vehicle automatically when a brake value of a brake system 20 of the vehicle exceeds a first threshold brake value and restart the engine automatically when the brake value drops below a second threshold brake value. The method further comprises determining the first threshold brake value (202, figure 2) as a first function of a gradient of a surface on which the vehicle is positioned, determining the second threshold brake value (204, figure 2) as a second function of the gradient, wherein the first and second threshold brake values are determined such that a difference between the first and second threshold brake values varies as a function of the gradient. At least one of the thresholds may comprise a brake pressure, torque or pedal displacement and / or looking up in one or more tables. A start-stop system is also claimed.
