Detection System, Detection device and method therefor

An image processing device is disclosed. The device comprises processing means configured to: determine a first zone 213,214 (e.g. a face zone) from an image associated with the user, wherein the first zone is associated with one or more features characterising the user (e.g. their face); determine a second zone 215,216 (a detection zone) from the, or a further, image associated with the user; wherein the location of at least some of the second zone is different from the location of the first zone; and determine a characteristic value from the second zone based on sample values associated with the second zone. The characteristic value could indicate the liveness of a face detected in the image so as to distinguish genuine users 205 from spoofing attacks 206. Background subtraction may be used to provide a mostly black detection zone 215 for genuine cases.
