Airbag apparatus

An airbag assembly (4) for a vehicle (2), comprising a primary bag (7) with a front face (10) having a primary surface (12), and a lateral restraint (6) configured to control rotation of the vehicle occupants head (19), wherein the lateral restraint (6) is disposed on a lateral region of the front face (10) and is untethered. Also provided is such an airbag assembly comprising one or more internal tethers (20), wherein said one or more internal tethers consist of one or more longitudinal tethers configured to extend in a longitudinal direction when the assembly is inflated. The lateral restraint may comprise at least one secondary bag comprising an auxiliary internal chamber in communication with the main internal chamber of the primary bag via one or more vents which may permit the flow of gas into the secondary bag and inhibit the flow of gas into the primary bag.
