Zusammenfassung: | A brake-by-wire system has a brake caliper body (14, fig 2) with pairs of coaxial piston bores (52, fig 6) on each side of a disc opening with opposed brake pads (22, fig 1), the caliper maintaining a clearance between the brake pads and the brake disc in use. Each piston has a seal groove 54 with an axial taper and a large leading edge radius 55 so that as hydraulic pressure is released the piston always retracts by a distance greater than the deflection of the calliper body for full retraction. The brake-by-wire system allows a fast hydraulic prefill. The body can be asymmetric (e.g. with different bore diameters); have a bridge (28, fig 8) spanning the opening; be monobloc; and a design method is described (fig 9) which minimises mass & maximises strength rather than stiffness allowing higher deflections with features coinciding with an ellipse. |
