Content transfer functionality beyond or within cellular networks

A wireless communication unit for communicating with a wireless network node and one or more wireless remote communication units is described. The wireless communication unit receives receive data content when connected to the wireless network node or a first wireless remote communication unit and stores the received data content. When no longer connected to the wireless network node or the first wireless remote communication unit, the stored data content is transmitted to at least one second wireless remote communication unit over an ad-hoc network or direct communication link (e.g. a mesh or peer-to-peer network). Also described is a wireless communication unit which receives data content from a wireless remote communication unit when not connected to a wireless communication unit (e.g. via a mesh or peer-to-peer network), stores the data content and transmits the data to a wireless network node or further wireless remote communication unit when connected to a wireless network node.
