Memory module having a memory controller for controlling non-volatile memory

A computer memory system includes non-volatile memory and a memory controller module including a memory controller (30). The memory controller module is selectively secured in a memory module socket (14) of e.g. DIMM form factor of a motherboard to provide the memory controller in communication with a memory module bus (15) using a memory bus standard (e.g. DDR). The memory controller includes one or more ports (39, fig 3) for communication with the non-volatile memory using a data storage protocol (e.g. SATA or SAS), wherein the memory controller controls read and write operations for the non-volatile memory. The memory system further includes one or more cables (50) connecting the one or more ports of the memory controller to the non­volatile memory. The non-volatile memory may be included in a separate memory module (40) received in a seconded memory module socket from which it may be powered. The nonvolatile memory may include multiple solid state drives.
