A system for use in a vehicle

A system 10 for use in a vehicle having a selected vehicle language, the system comprising image capture means 40 for capturing a scene external to the vehicle, wherein thescene includes one or more information indicators (signs, e.g. 62,64) including text in a country or foreign language different from the vehicle language. The system outputs signals representative of both the selected vehicle language and the country language to an off-board server. The system also outputs the text to the off-board server 52 for translation from the country language into the vehicle language. The translated text is communicated to the vehicle occupants, using multiple speakers 30 in different positions in the vehicle. The information is communicated through a speaker according to the position of the speaker and the position of the information indicator in the image scene. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 6) the system carries a translator on-board the vehicle. The system could also provide translations of symbols used in road-signs, and could derive the country language using a GPS sensor.
