Method and control device for controlling a power steering device and an adaptive damping system of a motor vehicle

A power steering device, with a mechanical steering angle range limited by steering stops, has an adaptive damping system that provides a variable damping force. When a steering stop is reached, the damping force 3 is increased simultaneously, preferably adjusting a hard damping force, with a maximum achievable steering angle 4. In an embodiment, once the steering angle 6 is away from the stop the damping force and maximum steering angle are reduced. Back-steering 5 may also be provided when the steering stop is reached. The maximum steering angle may depend on wheel-specific information such as the wheel width or attachments such as snow chains. The system can improve driver comfort while requiring elaborate modifications to the power steering device.
