Variator

A variator comprises first and second races 10 and at least one rolling element 12 in a cavity between the races 10. In a drive configuration, drive is transmitted between the races 10 and the rolling elements 12. In a neutral configuration, the roller elements 12 are moved into disconnect region 22 on the races 10 so that the roller elements 12 ceases to make contact with the races 10 and no drive is transmitted between the races 10. Alternatively in the neutral configuration the races 10 can move independently of one another away from the roller elements 10 so that no drive is transmitted and the drive configuration is obtained by moving the rolling elements 12 to a position in which they make contact with both of the races 12. Roller elements 12 are mounted in a carriage 14 moved by a control member 16 which provides one constraint and a pin 32 provides a second constraint. In the neutral configuration the control member 16 and pin 32 form a hinge axis about which the carriage 14 may tilt. Independent claims relate to a method of operating the variator.
