Zusammenfassung: | An impact energy absorbing device (6, Fig. 1) for a vehicle bumper includes a plurality of cells 20 that are grouped together to form a matrix structure defining a mounting region 10 and a contact region 12. The cells 20 crush along their respective longitudinal axes when exposed to an impact force on the contact region 12. Each of the longitudinal axes of the plurality of cells 20 in the matrix structure diverges with respect to neighbouring cells in a direction from the mounting region 10 to the contact region 12. Each of the cells 20 may have a mouth portion (40, Fig. 4) that encourages the cell to collapse inwardly by having an inverse taper. Each of the cells 20 may be metallic, polymeric, or made of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP), and the cells 20 are mounted on the vehicle frame (2, Fig. 1) by a mounting cell (66, Fig. 9) that co-operates with an attachment structure (64, Fig. 9). |
