Zusammenfassung:An engine comprising: one or more multi-valve cylinders 104a, with each multi-valve cylinder 104a having a plurality of intake valves 108a and/or a plurality of exhaust valves 110a. The engine also comprising one or more further cylinders 104b, with the or each further cylinder 104b having fewer intake valves 108b and/or fewer exhaust valves 110b than the or each multi-valve cylinder 104a, wherein a cylinder deactivation system 112 of the engine is configured to selectively deactivate the or at least one of each further cylinder 104b. The cylinder deactivation system can be used to shut down the operation of at least one of the further cylinders 104b to increase the fuel economy and decrease the emission of pollutants of the engine during low load driving conditions, and because the further cylinders 104b have fewer valves the invention allows the cylinder deactivation system 112 to be both simpler and less expensive.
