Zusammenfassung:A helmet (10, fig.1) comprising a shell, first and second retention members 26,28 movable with respect to each other and an adjustment mechanism (38, fig.1) the mechanism comprising an actuating member 50 movable in two directions to move at least one of the retention members; a clutch member (65, fig.3) having clutch teeth 62, a first locking member 64 and a second locking member 64, each locking member being engageable with the clutch teeth and movable between a locked and unlocked position, and a release mechanism 90 adapted to unlock the first locking member while leaving the second locking member in the locked position. The retention members preferably comprise straps. The retention members may comprise teeth 32,34, and the actuating member may comprise a rotatable pinion which engages the teeth. The second locking member preferably is a flexible arm and provides a ratcheting detent when the actuating member is being moved in the first direction.
