Zusammenfassung:Detecting traffic in a transport network by obtaining network usage records (10, Fig.1) from a mobile network 120; extracting cell information (39, 44, Fig.1) from the NUR 125; identifying the NUR originating from moving handsets from the cell information 130; and matching the identified NUR with a transport route 150 (e.g. scheduled transport route or road segment). The NUR may relate to real-time, near real-time or stored records of calls, SMS, cell change, MMS, USSD, IMSI and data download events. The extracted cell information may include cellular base station ID such that moving handsets are identified from cell ID changes. Transport routes may be matched with a mode (e.g. bus, rail, car, coach, walking, cycling, underground or tram). The transport network may be optimised (and future utilisation predicted) based on the traffic volumes, congestion, direction and time of use of the matched routes.
