Zusammenfassung:	A refuse collection system comprises a plurality of refuse bins each associated with and located at a household and a control centre computer operated by a refuse disposal operator. Each of the refuse bins comprises an RFID reader 23 and a communication module 29. Refuse is placed in pods 28 with an RFID tag 30 attached thereto that is indicative of the type of refuse in the pod and the pods are placed inside the refuse bin. The RFID reader of the bin detects the type of refuse in the households bin and the communication module transmits a data message with Information relating to the refuse in the households bin to the control centre computer. Collection of refuse is then scheduled by the control centre computer to collect certain types of refuse from the bin. In this way, refuse of a certain targeted type can be collected in bulk from a number of individual household bins in a collection run. The refuse bins may further detect odours using an olfactory sensor 33 and the bin may include a proximity sensor 31 to detect rubbish adjacent the mouth of the bin. The refuse may include compartments of varying size which may be colour coded for different types of rubbish.
